GnGeo2x is a Neo-Geo emulator. It is a port of GnGeo for the GP2X. GnGeo2x is part of the GnGeo development, both are the work of pepone using CPU core from others projects/people.

Installation

  1. Download and unzip GnGeo2x and place it on your SD.
  2. Unlike MAME GP2X, GnGeo2X needs the neogeo bios files listed below.
  3. Edit the conf/gngeorc as you want. Enable or disable sound, FPS display, change country/region etc....

Notes

New in Version 0.7

  1. Save state support
  2. Change the exit combo to L&R&Select or L&R&Start.
  3. Add a minimal menu system (access it via the "exit" combo )
  4. Fix TVout with Selector (still some work to do)
  5. Add Squidge's MMU Hack (via mmuhack.o module, more stable).
  6. Support dos line ending in the rom.rc files and in the gngeorc file (you shouldn't need programmer's notepad anymore )
  7. Fix the bug that prevent volume change when using a .cf file
  8. Fix miexchng slowdown, again

GnGeo2X versions 0.6.7a and earlier do not have a gui, so you have to start it via a Shellscript

HowTo like this:

If this does not work, look at the gngeo.log.txt in the folder, it should have been created and contains log about the latest run of your script.


To enable sound, add the --sound to your script like this

Also, if you see roms loading progress bars but return to the GP2X menu after the convert tile progress bar, you probably have an incomplete BIOS.

Rage2x, a frontend developed by JyCet is in 0.9 and available at the archive.

The Source Code is also available. Functionnality:

  • Screen Shots of the games in 152*112*8bits.
  • Games's informations.
  • Search of the avaible games in "/gngeo/roms/".
  • Options selection show fps, sound, samplerate(between 11025 and 44100Hz), speed of the 68000 or Z80, CPU speed of the GP2x (between 100 to 310MHz).

Bios

All files are placed in the roms directory within GnGeo2x (or whever ever you're storing your roms). If you have similar files (like ng-lo.rom, ng-sfix.rom) just rename them properly.

(1) NG-LO.ROM should be named 000-lo.lo

(2) NG-SFIX.ROM should be named SFIX.SFX

(3) NEO-GEO.ROM should be named SP-S2.SP1 - Or to any of the other countries (if you want to use them).

Unibios

Now there are cheats for every game, you can pause, theres a music player, you can play mvs or aes with region selection. There are so many new features added just by implementing unibios and I just wanted to give thanks to the creator of gngeo and unibios.

  • To access the cheat menu pause, then press select and start at the same time.
  • To access the region menu and jukebox press axb at the same time during the splash screen.

Current Issues

  • Sound is not optimized, and can make the emulation slow.
  • The bug on the DMA of the GP2x may do some slowdown when loading .gfx files.

Enabling Switches for the Selector

When Y is pressed at the Selector screen, sound can be enabled, and a logfile can be created (this doesn't work at the moment though). However, more switches can be enabled to change the way gngeo2x runs. First you must open gngeo2x_config with Programmer's Notepad (or something similar) and then add lines to the "#List of full paths of command line options" section. The lines are in this format:

cmdLine=./gngeo --switch1 --switch2

Where "switch1" are actual switches. Copy and paste the above text into the file, and then change the "switch1" texts to proper switches. These switches can be enabled:

    --autoframeskip        Enable auto frameskip
-c, --convtile             Convert tile in internal format at loading
    --country=STRING       Set the contry to japan, asia, usa or europe
    --forcepc              Force the PC to a correct value at startup (may help some games)
-H, --hwsurface            Use hardware surface for the screen (allways true for the GP2X)
-I, --interpolation        Merge the last frame and the current
    --overclock=N          Overclock the 68k by N%
-P, --pal                  Use PAL timing (buggy)
-r, --raster               Enable the raster interrupt (for supersidekick 2, 3 and 4 for example)
-i, --rompath=STRING       Use STRING as rom path
-d, --romrc=STRING         Use STRING as romrc file
-d, --romrcdir=STRING      Use STRING as romrc.d directory
    --sound                Enable sound
    --showfps              Show FPS at startup
    --sleepidle            Sleep when idle
    --screen320            Use 320x224 output screen (instead 304x224)
    --system=STRING        Set the system to home, arcade or unibios
    --samplerate=11025     Set the sample rate to 11025
-t, --transpack=STRING     Use the specified transparency pack

If you don't know what a string does, don't enable it!

If a game runs slowly with sound, add the --samplerate=11025 switch. This will make the sound quality a bit worse, but will also speed up the game. Remember that to run a game with lower quality sound, you need the --sound as well as --samplerate=11025.

If a game's graphics look wrong (repeated images, graphics in the wrong places, NOT garbled - this is the sign of a bad dump) then try using the --raster switch. Neo Cup '98 is a good example of a game which needs the raster interrupt.

Large Roms using dumpgfx, overcoming the "Out of Memory" error

Large roms need to be dumped using pepone's dumpgfx utility before use because of RAM limitation. Linux, Windows

and OSX versions of this utility are available.

The created dump.gfx is placed along with the rom.zip in roms directory.

As only the dump.gfx file is accessed for graphics information, it is now possible to replace the existing

graphics rom/bin files within the rom.zip with dummy 0kb files to save the space taken up by each game.

These files can simply be made up using any text editing software.

"c" files are for the graphics, i.e. 123_c1.rom or abc_c1.bin.

You can save further space if you run a particular rom without sound as you can also replace the exisiting sound

rom/bin files with dummy 0kb files.

"v" files are for the sound, i.e. 123_v1.rom or abc_v1.bin.

games that have been reported unplayable before are in fact playable.:) Also make sure your rom matches the

naming convention in the romrc file.
