Installing Software onto your GP2X

Installing software onto your GP2X is very easy and once you have done it once, chances are the procedure for installing another piece of software is the same. There are a couple of different ways you can install software and in Firmware's 2.11 and greater you can install software onto the NAND flash memory for easy access.

Requirements

GP2X(MK1, MK2)

SD Card

SD Card Reader

MiniUSB-Cable

Installation via SD Card

Download your software of choice, whether that is an emulator, application or game. It will normally be in a zip and contain generally a gpe file, readme and any associated resource files.

A lot of programs have specific steps you have to follow that are detailed in the readme. Read this before copying anything and it should minimize the chance of forgetting to do something.

Plug your SD card into your SD Card Reader and connect it to your computer. The SD card will be mounted as a drive like F: I would suggest for organization's sake that you should create separate folders for each game or application you install so that there are no conflicts.

A good setup for an SD card would be something like

F:
  \Emulators
       \CPS2
       \Neo-Geo
       \SNES
  \Applications
       \TextReader2X
  \Games
       \Payback

Copy the .gpe file and any associated data files that are needed for the program to the directory you created and wait for it to finish copying.

Plug the SD card into your GP2X and boot it up. Go into the Games Menu and Select SD Card. Go to the directory you copied the game to and run the .gpe file

Installation via Mini-USB to SD Card

This is a small section for people who don't have a card reader and want to be able to copy programs across still. Put a SD card into the SD card slot on the GP2X Start up the GP2X and go into settings and then USB.

You will have 2 options, either "SD Card" or "NAND". Choose SD Card as you want access to the SD card plugged into your GP2X.

Plug in a Mini-USB cable into your GP2X and connect it to your PC. The SD card will show up as a drive and you will be able to follow the above steps to install a program to the SD card.

Installation via Mini-USB to NAND Flash

Installing to NAND is not necessary most times as most programs work well on SD Cards. I'd suggest only installing small programs and perhaps GMenu2X as the NAND has a limited number of writes. Start up the GP2X and go into settings and then USB.

You will have 2 options, either "SD Card" or "NAND". Choose NAND as you want access to the NAND on your GP2X. Plug in a Mini-USB cable into your GP2X and connect it to your PC.

The NAND will show up as a drive and you will be able to follow the above steps to install a program to the NAND. If you use a menu such as GMenu2X you will be able to link to programs on the NAND and run them.

Hopefully the steps that are listed are easy enough to follow. Anyone who wants to modify this, go ahead and discuss the changes in the Discussion section of this page.
