Possible Input Options
Perhaps we can take a page out of the iLarn book. iLarn for the Palm Pilot is similar to NetHack. It allows for four movement buttons, and four additional controls. The rest is handled through either through Grafiti, or the menu. Why not implement a menu system? Allow most of the buttons to be user programmable, and one dedicated menu button. Just a thought.

"Combo" Input System
I propose we use an input system based on combinations of button presses. No offence Kichigai, but I think a menu system is unwieldy. 4^3 = 64, three button combinations should be able to cover every command.
